Bringing together a collective of like-minded filmmakers as well as equipment, Skreen Films hopes to support films – both fiction and non-fiction, shorts and features – that are non-commercial, widely accessible, driven by a personal vision and which encourage both a dialogue of ideas as well as a play with filmmaking as a medium.

The name ‘Skreen’ derives from an Old English word meaning a shrine, or a cupboard. It was usually a portable cabinet with hinged doors.

​

Pronounced the same but spelled differently, a screen is the large flat-white or silver surface upon which moving images are projected. And also: a system for appraising and selecting personnel | a movable device, especially a framed construction, designed to divide, conceal or protect | a window insertion of framed wire or plastic mesh used to keep out insects | a course sieve used for sifting out fine particles, as of sand, gravel, or coa​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Born in Bangalore, Karnataka, in 1986, Saumyananda Sahi was the youngest participant in the Talent Campus India (2004), and the Berlinale Talent Campus at the Berlin International Film Festival (2005).

​

Over the last ten years Saumyananda has worked as a cinematographer on both documentaries as well as fiction features with eminent directors including Anne Aghion, Thomas F. Lennon, Kamal Swaroop, Gitanjali Rao, Vasant Nath, Arun Karthick, Anamika Huksar and Sunanda Bhat.

Saumyananda graduated from St. Stephens College, Delhi, with a distinction in Philosophy, and studied Film Cinematography in the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. He founded Skreen Films with his wife, Tanushree Das Sahi. He is currently based in Goa, India.

Born in Barrackpore, Kolkata on the 28th of August 1980, Tanushree Das graduated from the University of Calcutta with a Masters in English Literature.

 

In 2011 Tanushree graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (Pune) with a Diploma in Film Editing, and has since edited for acclaimed directors such as Kamal Swaroop (‘Rangbhoomi’ – National Award for Best Documentary, 2014), Gitanjali Rao (‘Chai’), Sunanda Bhat (‘Have You Seen the Arana?’ – Jeevika Award for best Editing), Prateek Vats ('A very Old Man With Enormous Wings' - National Award, 2017) and Vasant Nath.

 

Tanushree has also worked in numerous documentary as well as fiction projects as a gaffer, and also as a sound recordist. She has directed plays, documentaries as well as short films, and is presently working on her debut fiction feature project.

 

Tanushree presently lives in Goa and is the co-founder of Skreen Films with her husband, Saumyananda Sahi.
